Ross Garlick began his entrepreneurial journey with SI360 at Fordham University and continues his quest to center social good in his corporate career at J.P. Morgan.
Over the course of his undergraduate career, Ross not only completed his fellowship, but also went on to become a mentor for SI360. He even served as the president for one of Fordham’s business organizations.
As a SI360 fellow, Ross began with an idea to rent and deliver air mattresses to students at the University. His philosophy was to “increase the utilization of the way resources exist.” This business not only flourished, but it also expanded to New York University. Ross believed that it was crucial to help others, and by doing so, he would make a positive difference. With this mentality, SI360 would help to bridge the gap between his entrepreneurial aspirations and his natural need to positively influence the community.
With the skillsets learned at SI360, Ross continues to be a social change agent in the corporate workplace by creating a space for his colleagues to have discussions on current and past social issues. He brings these issues under a microscope in the corporate environment, including the unintentional biases of white men, recycling, and the benefits of eating less meat. He actively discusses these topics at his workplace in order to promote social awareness and to advocate for those who may not have a voice. He also continues to provide strategic advice to help his company become more sustainable.
The SI360 connection
Ross believes SI360 helped form his reality of starting a business or product. It showed Ross how to interconnect building a business while also influencing the community around him in a positive manner. Ross’s viewpoint remains the same; businesses should care about stakeholders, employees, and the general public. “Everyone should be able to afford a decent standard of living if they are willing to work full time,” he said.
“[SI360] is a community that builds lifelong connections,” Ross said. “Everyone who is a part of SI360 shares the same purpose of socially impacting their environment…there is no better networking opportunity for those who are trying to encourage positive social change,” said Ross.
